Thirteen
Before I knew it, the rest of November, December, and January flew by.
I still hadnât told Ryanâs family about the baby. I was afraid to. I had no idea what their reaction would be and I didnât want to risk losing the connection I had with Tyler. I hadnât even told Courtney yet. So far it had been my secret to keep aside from my mom, Bobby, Kendra, and Rose, but I knew I couldnât keep it that way forever. What if his parents didnât believe me? What if they thought I was doing it to be in their family?
What if they get mad you didnât tell them sooner?
I didnât have the answer.
When I wasnât in school, I hid out in my room listening to music and eating junk food. I went to therapy twice a week. It was nice having someone who didnât have an opinion before I told my side of the story.
The only time my phone went off with any texts or calls was when Tyler or Kendra messaged to check on me. No one else attempted to talk to me outside of my family. I couldnât go to Jenelle and talk like old times since she had pulled away from me. Or did I pull away from her? I didnât know anymore. It was as if everything decided to crumble all at once. My life was splintering into pieces.
But Tyler did make me feel a little bit better.
I couldnât get him off my mind.
Now it was time for the prom section of the school year. Everyone was talking about it.
Who are you going with?
What are you wearing?
What are you doing beforehand?
Who do you think wonât show up?
My name was brought up in a few whispers. I ignored them. I didnât care what anyone thought of me anymore.
âDoes she have aâ¦baby bump?â I heard a girl snicker.
My blood went cold. Leave me alone. Self-consciousness sprang up within me, but I pushed it away. Donât listen to them.
I pretended she didnât say anything and continued the combination to get into my locker. I held my textbooks tighter to me. Iâve started wearing baggy clothes hoping no one will notice my growing bump, especially around Tyler. It isnât huge, but is slowly getting noticeable.
âOh!â her friend replied. âDefinitely.â
They laughed, openly staring at me. I shifted uncomfortably and messed up the numbers. Dang it.
âThereâs no way she isnât. She must be sleeping around.â
âWellâ¦yeah. She doesnât have Ryan anymore to mess with.â
My stomach coiled. I swallowed as anger rose within me. Donât listen to them. Keep turning the dial.
I shakily opened my locker and tossed the books onto the shelf, hastily grabbing what I needed. Students were staring at me. Nervousness swelled within me, and I pushed the feeling away. Or tried to.
âWhat a slut.â
âI know, right?â
âSucks to be her.â
Laughter and scoffs echoed in my mind as I rushed to my next class. I kept my head down and held my textbooks tightly to me. I didnât confirm or deny anything. I didnât make any comments.
